Nursing students on Tuesday staged a protest in Srinagar to demand release of their classmate Muhammad Iqbal who has been detained for allegedly accompanying three militants killed in the Jammu gunfight on September 13.

Iqbal, according to the police, was detained on September 12 from a truck in which three militants of Jaish-e-Muhammad were travelling before being killed in a gunfight a day later.

The students said that Iqbal is a 4th year student of B Sc. Nursing at SKIMS who had travelled to Jammu to seek an appointment with a doctor for his ailing father.

Iqbal, a resident of Futlipora village in Pakherpora area of Budgam, last attended his class on September 9, they said.

“Our senior has been arrested. He has been lodged in an unknown case. His father is ill. He had travelled to Jammu for his father’s treatment. His whereabouts should be made public. He should be released,” said a student.

On September 12, police said that a truck driver and his “conductor” were arrested after they were intercepted while ferrying militants in Jhajjar Kotli area of Jammu.

An army official claimed the driver and the “conductor” were trained over ground workers.
